Converting an existing video file

If you have an .avi file you would like to convert to the Windows Media format, follow the instructions below. Using an .avi files yields high-quality audio capture and will improve the overall quality of the presentation. Note: You can also use the WME 7 to convert an existing .wmv, .wma, .asf file.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows Media, and then click Windows Media Encoder.

  2. In the Welcome to Windows Media Encoder dialog box, click the Broadcast, capture, or convert a file using the New Session Wizard option, and then click OK.

  3. On the first page of the New Session Wizard, click the Convert an audio or video file into a Windows Media file option, make sure the Begin capturing when this wizard finishes check box is cleared, and then click Next.

  4. On the next page, specify the path and file names of the source file and the .wmv (video) file to be created, and then click Next.

  5. On the next page, click the File will stream from a Web server or play directly on a computer option, and then click Next.

  6. On the next page, choose a profile that uses the Windows Media Screen codec, because your source file contains screen-capture content. Click Next.

  7. On the next page, type the information (title, author, and so on) that you want to appear when the content is played, and then click Next.

  8. On the next page, review the settings and make sure they are correct, and then click Finish.

  9. When the dialog box appears, click OK.

  10. On the encoder’s main user interface, click Start to begin the conversion process.

    Note: If you keep the encoder’s user interface maximized during the conversion process, you will notice that in the Video panel, content in the Input and Output areas is now visible. You were not able to see content in these areas during screen capture.

  11. When the process completes, note the contents of the Encoding Results dialog box, and then click Close.

  12. Close the encoder. A warning message appears, asking whether you want to save the encoding session. If you do, the file will have a .wme extension.
