Apricorn: Secure Removeable Storage
.
Apricorn's
EZ Bus Mini is the world's first and only bus powered USB-IF certified HDD. The model we are using is the 20GB variety, but there are models at 40 GB and 60GB capacities. GB It is totally bus-powered so no AC adapter is required. The hard drive enclosure has a recessed compartment to keep the attached USC cable hidden from view. For more information, see the Apricon Web Site.
For re-imaging support on newer desktop machines, ITS/DSG recommends using an Apricorn drive instead of a network connection to a SIS server or notebook on the latest desktops provided by HP Compaq and Dell. The Apricorn HDD (EBM-20 in our case) can be powered sufficiently by a Dell GX280 or above and a HP Compaq DC5000 or above. Unfortunately, notebooks and older models of desktops do not have the USB power capability to operate an Apricorn drive.
Apricorn also provides backup software with its EBM line. EZ Gig II incorporates two separate utilities, Clone EZ (creates a bootable clone of the hard drive) and Image EZ (backs up the hard drive in a compressed format).
And, Apricorn provides encryption software (to secure confidential and sensitive information) and sychronizing software (to allow file sharing for replication among PCs).
With these tools ITS/DSG is planning to provide a real-time backup and mirroring tool for users who need frequent or continuous backup.
Shutting down a system with the Apricorn drive still attached does not harm the drive. However, to remove the drive while the system is active, it is recommended that you locate the remove drive icon
found in the lower right-hard tray. Click on it and follow directions.
