How-To: Uninstall McAfee on a Mac

There are two ways of uninstalling McAfee on your Mac. There may be a set of uninstall programs already installed. If not, one can download an uninstaller and run it.

Assuming you know how to use the Terminal Utility and have /usr/local/Mcafee/uninstallMSC available do the following:

1. Login using an adminstrator account.
2. Open the Terminal application (if it's not in the tray, it's in Utilities).
3. CD to the McAfee installation directory... ("cd /usr/local/McAfee")
4. Enter "./uninstallMSC"
   
   
   
   
5. The uninstall script will ask you for an admin password; use the one from the login.
6. Wait until you get an "uninstalled Successfully" message on the terminal.
   
   
   

   
   

7. In addition, the McAfee agent (cma) needs to be uninstalled. CD to the McAfee/cma Library directory ("cd /Library/McAfee/cma").
8. Enter "sudo ./uninstall.sh" and provide the admin password as before.

Otherwise, assuming you need to download an uninstall utility, do the following:

1. Download the uninstall utility VirusScan Uninstall Command from "http://www.calstatela.edu/its/services/software/howto/Mac/ftp/."


2. In Downloads, double-click on VirusScan Uninstall.command.




3. Click Open to start the utility.




4. Type in your admin password.




5. Wait until "VirusScan has been successfully uninstalled" and restart your system.




6. In addition, the McAfee agent (cma) may need to be uninstalled.  In a Terminal window (if it's not in the tray, it's in Utilities). If you type in "ps -ef | grep McAfee" and get a line of output (other than the grep line), CD to the McAfee/cma Library directory ("cd /Library/McAfee/cma").




7. Enter "sudo ./uninstall.sh" and provide the admin password as before.
