Student E-mail: It's Official
Student
e-mail is more essential than ever before. Beginning next winter
quarter, January 2, 2008, Cal State L.A. will use e-mail as an
official means of communicating business and academic
information to students. Messages sent to students’ Network
Information Services (NIS) e-mail accounts from administrative
offices, colleges, and faculty will be considered official
University communications.
Benefits to Students and the University
Although there are other methods the University may use to communicate to students when appropriate or required by law or contractual obligations, e-mail will be considered the primary method. Using e-mail in this manner provides the following benefits:
- Timely delivery of notifications
- Convenient access to campus e-mail accounts 24/7 from any Web browser
- Stable e-mail address for as long as the student maintains continuing student status
- Cost-effective, and environmentally sensitive means of communication
- Faster than paper mail
Pick Up Your NIS Account
All enrolled Cal State L.A. students should “pick up” their free NIS accounts at the ITS Help Desk (LIB PW Lobby). Picking up your account means getting your user ID and password and signing an appropriate use agreement. To get your NIS account information, do the following:
- Go to the ITS Help Desk.
- Bring proof of enrollment as well as your Golden Eagle Card or a picture ID.
- If your account was pre-created, you will be issued your user ID and password at this time.
- If your account needs to be created, you will be asked to complete the Student NIS Account Application. Then come back to the ITS Help Desk the next day to pick up your account.
Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to keep their e-mail accounts below the maximum storage capacity (not full) so that mail will not be bounced back to the sender. The storage limit on student e-mail accounts is 100 megabytes. As some messages may be time-critical, students are expected to check their e-mail inboxes frequently, and to open and read their campus e-mail messages in a timely manner.
Stay Informed
E-mail is an increasingly accepted means of communicating with students in higher education. Campus e-mail provides an excellent way for students to read and respond to important communications such as deadlines, academic information, registration status, requirements, announcements, advisories, and scholarship opportunities.
