Got NIS?
An important reminder to students
You must have an Network Information Services (NIS) account to access all campus technology resources. This includes access to Library computers and databases, as well as the campus wireless network, the myCSULA student portal, WebCT, and remote Internet connections.
Effective January 2, 2008, NIS accounts will be required to log into all computing resources, including classroom and Open Access Lab computers.
Requiring NIS accounts boosts campus security for accessing computers and other technological resources. Each account has a unique user ID and password, and account users must sign an appropriate use agreement. Using NIS accounts helps ensure the security of confidential information and the protection of campus computers, networks, infrastructure, and other vital assets.
Pick Up Your NIS Account
All enrolled Cal State L.A. students should “pick up” their free NIS accounts, which include e-mail, at the ITS Help Desk (LIB PW Lobby). Picking up your account means getting your user ID and password and signing an appropriate use agreement. To get your NIS account information, do the following:
- Go to the ITS Help Desk (LIB PW Lobby).
- Bring proof of enrollment as well as your Golden Eagle Card or a picture ID.
- If your account was pre-created, you will be issued your user ID and password at this time.
- If your account needs to be created, you will be asked to complete the Student NIS Account Application. Come back to the ITS Help Desk the next day to pick up your account information.
Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to keep their e-mail accounts below the maximum storage capacity – that is, below 100 megabytes – so that mail will not be bounced back to the sender. As some messages may be time-critical, students are expected to check their e-mail inboxes frequently, and to open and read their campus e-mail messages in a timely manner.
An NIS account is your passport to campus information technology. Lean more about NIS accounts and what they can access at http://www.calstatela.edu/nis.
