A New Student E-mail System

Image: of @ sign Cal State L.A. students have a new free web-based e-mail system: Microsoft Exchange Outlook Web Access (OWA) 2003 -- the same web-based e-mail system used for faculty and staff. Modern and robust, OWA offers many features that weren’t available on the Webmail system, including:

  • Calendaring (setting and responding to appointment requests)
  • Contacts (names and addresses)
  • Task List (keep track of all your to-dos)
  • Spam Filtering
  • Secure Web site connection (https://)
  • Drag and drop with right-click capability from a compatible browser (Internet Explorer 6.0 or above is recommended)
  • 100 megabytes of storage – ten times previous limit

How Can I Access My Campus E-mail Account?

You need a campus network information services (NIS) account to access your campus e-mail. Activate your NIS account at the ITS Help Desk (LIB PW Lobby). Then, go to your web browser and make sure the browser’s pop-up blocker is turned off and the cache is cleared. Use your NIS ID and password to log in at https://mymail.www.calstatela.edu.

How do I upgrade from Webmail to OWA?

All new fall 2006 students will have e-mail accounts created on the new OWA system. Continuing students who previously had a WebMail account need to upgrade to the new system -- it's practically automatic once you access OWA.  Read Upgrading Student E-mail Accounts from WebMail to Outlook for more information. Students should upgrade from Webmail to OWA by the end of the fall 2006 quarter. If you do not upgrade by then, the campus will do it for you.

What will happen to the messages in my WebMail account?

You may continue using you existing Webmail account for a limited time. If you want to keep the messages that are currently in your WebMail account, follow these steps:

  • First upgrade to OWA.  Now all incoming messages will sent to your OWA account.
  • Access your WebMail account and forward the messages you want to keep to yourself.  They will be received in your OWA account.
  • All students should be migrated to the new OWA by the end of Winter Quarter, 2007. Access to Webmail will be available until the end of Spring Quarter, 2007, when the system will be retired.

Too Good to Pass Up

With expanded features and plenty of storage, every student needs to take advantage the new OWA. It’s free. It’s fun. It’s a fundamental part of campus life.

For more information on the new student e-mail service, activate your NIS account and visit https://mymail.www.calstatela.edu.
