California State University, Los Angeles

Block that Virus!  Block that Spam!

The University continues to shore up its defenses against the increasing spread of computer viruses and proliferation of spam. Helping to protect confidential information and the campus’s computing resources are the following:
Image: Spam Filter blocks Spam

  • Desktop and server anti-virus and anti-spam services
  • A secure virtual private network (VPN)
  • Outlook’s junk mail handling feature
  • Router controls
  • Network traffic management
  • Firewalls

Another Layer of Protection

The anti-virus/anti-spam services are enhanced to provide additional protection of the University’s confidential/sensitive information and computing resources. Since viruses are potentially such a dangerous threat, all users with a campus e-mail account are, by default, opted in to the anti-virus service on an ongoing basis. However, users can opt in or out of the anti-spam service as they please.

User Options

The enhanced anti-virus/anti-spam services support all ITS-managed mail accounts, and offer users some degree of control over the way spam is handled in their mailboxes. For example, users will be able to:

  • Opt in and out of the anti-spam service
  • Maintain a blocked senders list
  • Maintain an approved senders list
  • Release spam messages from quarantine and send them to their inboxes
  • Delete blocked messages from view in the quarantine
  • Get a digest (listing) of the quarantined spam messages

User Resources

While the entire campus community automatically benefits from the anti-virus services, users who want the anti-spam service must subscribe (opt in) to it. Check out these useful resources:
