Online Treasure Hunt Drawing: Ruben Garcia Is a Winner!

Photo of Ruben Garcia with laptopRuben Garcia, the Online Treasure Hunt winner, is taking home a new HP Compaq 6720s Notebook PC as his prize. His entry was randomly selected and he submitted the correct SecurityTips. “I’m in shock,” Mr. Garcia admitted when he came to the ITS office to redeem his laptop. “At first, I didn’t believe it.”

Ruben thought that finding the first four Online Treasure Hunt Password Keys was easy, but the fifth one was a bit harder. So he dug deeper and clicked on all the links until he found it. “I’ve learned from this that whatever you put your mind to achieving, something good will come of it.”

An incoming freshman from Whittier High School, Mr. Garcia enrolled at Cal State L.A. for its School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics and new Forensic Science Center. “I’ve wanted to be in law enforcement all my life, especially to pursue a career in forensics” said Ruben. “After getting my degree, my initial goal is to work for a sheriff’s department, and my dream is to eventually become a member of the FBI.”

Mr. Garcia reports being glad he decided to attend Cal State L.A. His experiences here have been positive, even before winning the laptop. "It's very different from what I’ve been used to, and the campus is so big. The classes are great, and everyone here has been very helpful."

Ruben frequently uses his NIS account to access his student e-mail and the computers in the Library and Open Access Labs. “It’s important to check e-mail every day,” he said. “I don’t want to miss any important messages from the University. The faculty communicates with us by e-mail, and they require us to submit assignments as attachments to an email.” To save and cut down on gasoline expenses, Ruben prefers to do his homework in the campus labs and communicate about projects with classmates via his NIS e-mail account.

Ruben knew having an HP laptop on campus would be beneficial for doing homework, research, and write papers. Not realizing that his entry in the Online Treasure Hunt Drawing has been selected, Ruben went to great lengths to try to get a laptop over the Thanksgiving break. He waited in line overnight at Best Buy in hopes of buying one of the specially priced laptops. But, he was the twentieth person from the front of the line and there were only six laptops available. Very disappointed, Ruben hoped he might get one for Christmas. After the break, he rechecked his e-mail messages and realized that he was the winner. Christmas came a little early this year.

Congratulations, Ruben Garcia! Are You Secure padlock logo
