1. Q: Why has the change been made to require authentication
on Library computers?
A: This has been done to ensure our network is secure, and
that those using it are following the acceptable use guidelines.
In the event of any security breach we are able to associate
users of our network to specific computers, times and dates.

2. Q: What account can I use to log onto library PCs?
A: You can use your staff, faculty or student NIS account or
your Library Guest Account.

3. Q: What do
I do, if I do not have an NIS account?
A: If you are a currently enrolled CSLA Student
you can pickup your NIS account from the ITS Help Desk with your
ID and proof of enrollment (Printed GET Class Schedule). If you
are not a CSULA student, you may be eligible for a Guest account
through a campus affiliation (see #8), or request a Temporary
Account (see #9 and #10)

4. Q: Is there a time limit on how long I can use the
computers in the library?
A: To ensure computers are available for
everyone who needs to use one, the PCs you log into with
your network account
have a time limit of one hour. If computers are available,
patrons may log-in again for additional sessions.

5. Q: When am
I eligible to pick up my NIS account?
A: As soon as you are eligible to enroll
at CSULA as a student. We encourage everyone to pick up their
student network account
as soon as possible.

6. Q: What do I need to pick up my network
account?
A: You will need your -
• Golden Eagle One Card or a valid state photo ID, and
• A copy of your class schedule.

7. Q: When will I need to use my NIS account?
A: NIS accounts are needed for the following services:
• Use of Library computers,
• Accessing your CSULA e-mail (MyMail)
• Accessing the CSULA Wireless Network “Hot Spots” available
on campus
• Accessing the Library Databases from home (CSULA students and
faculty only)
• To take free Student Scholar’s Training Program workshops
given by ITS
• Use of Open Access Lab computers (effective winter 2008)

8. Q: I am not
a CSULA student, faculty or staff; may I apply for a Library
Guest Account?
A: Library Guest Accounts may be issued to
the following CSULA affiliated groups at no charge from the
ITS Help Desk(Guest accounts
are good until the expiration of the Library card and can be
renewed; provides in-library access only):
•
CSULA Extended Learning students
•
Students currently enrolled at a different CSU campus with a
valid student ID
•
Faculty from other CSU campuses
•
A visiting faculty member currently employed by any college or
university outside the CSU system, with a valid ID issued by
his/her home institution
•
Friends of the Cal State LA University Library members
•
Current members of the CSULA Alumni Association
•
Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), and Math
and Science School (MASS) students with valid student ID (this
is temporarily on hold)
•
Other community high school students with valid CSULA Library
cards
•
Students of mutual use community colleges (East Los Angeles College,
Glendale Community College, Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles
Trade Tech College, Pasadena City College and Rio Hondo College)
with valid student ID.
•
Los Angeles County Teachers
If you qualify for a Library Guest Account, you must first go to the Library Circulation Desk to get a Library Card. Once you have a valid Library Card you can then go to the ITS Help Desk to apply for and get your Library Guest Account.

9. Q: I do not belong to any of the affiliated groups so how
do I get access?
A: By joining Friends of the Cal State LA University
Library (http://www.calstatela.edu/library/FOL/), you will be
eligible
for a guest account. You must present proof of current “Friends
of the Library” membership with your photo ID to obtain
the account. If you do not wish to join Friends of the Library you
can apply for a one time Temporary Library Account. This account
can be used to log into a Public computer in the Library on the
day issued. You will need to present a Valid CA Drivers License
or ID Card, and fill in an application at the Library’s
Circulation Desk ( Library North 1000 )

10. Q: I don’t want to pay
to be a member of the Friends of the Library but I need to access
a computer.
A: You can request a Temporary account at the Circulation
Desk that will only be active (valid) for the day issued.You
will need to present a Valid CA Drivers License or ID Card, and
fill in an application at the Library’s Circulation Desk.

11. Q: The ITS Help Desk is closed.
How can I get an account today?
A: You can obtain a Temporary account at the Circulation
Desk for today, but you will have to return during the Help Desk’s
normal business hours. Remember to bring a valid CA ID (Drivers
or CA) and the ID from
your organization.

12. Q: Where do I pick up my account
if I do not have one? What are the Help Desk operating hours?
A: You pick up your accounts at the ITS Help Desk, located in
the lobby of Library Palmer Wing
ITS Help Desk Regular Hours:
8:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday - Thursday
8:00 am – 5:00 pm Friday
9:00 am – 1:00 pm Saturday

13. Q: Can I use my Library Guest
Account in the university Labs and other areas on campus?
A: No, this account will only allow you to log into computers
in the library.

14. Will I have access to other
CSULA network resources such as e-mail accounts, wireless and
the Library databases via
the proxy server with the Library Guest Account?
A: No, this account will only provide you access to log onto
the Library computers and access to the internet on these computers.

15. Q: I’ve lost my account
and password, what do I do?
A: Go to the ITS Help Desk (With a valid I.D. and proof
of current enrollment) and ask for a re-set of your password.
If it is outside help desk
hours,
then
you
may
request
a Temporary account at the Circulation Desk, until you can come
back when the help desk is open. See #11 above for Help Desk
hours.

16. Q: I qualify as a member of
a CSULA affiliated group, but I don’t have my organizations
ID with me. What should I do today?
A: You may request a Temporary account . You will need
to present a Valid CA Drivers License or ID Card, and fill in
an application at the Library’s Circulation Desk. When
you get a valid ID from your group you can return to the ITS
Help Desk and apply for a CSULA affiliated group account.
