The purpose of these FAQs is to provide answers to common problems and issues that are faced by faculty/staff about computing resources at CSULA

Electronic Classrooms

ECs, also known as computer classrooms, contain between 15 to 35 computer workstations for "hands-on" instruction. Several ECs are equipped with data projectors. A faculty NIS account is required to access the faculty workstation. Most EC rooms require Golden Eagle Card access. Arrangements for entry must be made prior to the beginning of the quarter through the One Card Office at (323) 343-6800.

If there is a problem with the computers, projector, and/or the printers during instruction between 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. M-TH, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Fri, contact the ITS Help Desk at x6170 to have an ITS staff member paged to provide immediate assistance.

If there is a problem with the computers connecting to the network during instruction after 6 p.m. M-TH, 5 p.m. Fri, and on weekends, please call x2630 to have the ITS staff on call paged.

E-mail

Faculty/staff members can receive e-mail using IMAP/POP/SMTP access.

 

On Campus:

IMAP Server: imap.calstatela.edu

POP Server: pop.calstatela.edu

SMTP Server: smtp.calstatela.edu

 

Off Campus:

IMAP Server: imapmail.calstatela.edu

POP Server: popmail.calstatela.edu

SMTP Server: smtpmail.calstatela.edu

 

Note: When typing in your e-mail address in the settings, type in userid@exchange.calstatela.edu, and be sure to enable authentication for the SMTP server.

 

ITS provides, maintains, and supports e-mail use for all faculty via the use of Outlook 2003 (for the PC) and Microsoft Entourage 2004 (for the Mac) as the only supported e-mail clients. E-mail is also available via the Web at
https://email.calstatela.edu/.

ITS supports the use of e-mail access via the Web at https://email.calstatela.edu/. Faculty/staff with an NIS/CSLA account and an Internet connection can access this link from anywhere in the world. For help setting up e-mail clients, please contact Academic Support at (323)343-2087.

Under the campus baseline plan, ITS provides, maintains, and supports a campus modem pool comprised of 252 lines. Currently, there are 24 high-speed access lines (56K) for faculty with the remainder for students. To set this up, you can contact the ITS Helpdesk at extension x6170 and a consultant will walk you through the setup process on your personal computer over the phone. NOTE: Windows XP / Mac OS X required.

General

Faculty/staff who need an NIS account must apply using the online application available here http://www.calstatela.edu/its/forms/network_account/.  You will need to fill it out, and print out the hard copy that will come out as a PDF file through Adobe Reader. Alternatively, you can have a Helpdesk Consultant assist you with the application by going to the ITS Help Desk in the Library Palmer Wing (LIB PW) Lobby. The application will be accepted after it has the approval from a college chair or manager and dean. If you are a UAS employee, your application requires the UAS Director's signature as well.

Media Enhanced Classrooms (MECs)

MECs have a permanently mounted TV/VCR, DVD (in most), and an overhead transparency projector. The equipment is secured with tamper alarms, but the room itself does not have an alarm.

A list is maintained in your college or college office.

Please contact your college secretary or college office.

Currently, ITS does not provide after hour support for MECs.

Office Computer

Baseline workstations can have devices added to them. Please contact the Office of Academic Support at (323)343-2087.

Please make sure the monitor is securely plugged into the computer and/or the wall outlet, and that the power is on. If the computer is on and there is no display, please contact your respective college ITC or the ITS Help Desk at extension x6170.

Please make sure the computer's power cord is securely connected to the wall outlet, and that the monitor is on. (If the monitor does not turn on, please check above.) If the computer still does not turn on, please contact the Office of Academic Support at (323)343-2087.

Open Access Labs

There are six (6) Open Access Labs available to all students. For complete information on hours, hardware, software, and streaming media guided tours, please visit the following link http://www.calstatela.edu/oal.

To request a software installation, please contact the Office of Academic Support at (323) 343-2087 for review and approval before the sixth week of the quarter prior to the quarter of intended use. For example, if the software is to be ready for use by the first day of the fall quarter, the form is due before the sixth week of the summer quarter. For further information call (323) 343-3818.

Technologically Enhanced Classrooms (TEC)

TECs, also known as Smart Classrooms, are equipped with a networked computer, data projector, VCR, DVD (in most), speakers, and an overhead transparency projector. TECs are secured with an omnilock. The code must be obtained through the college dean's office responsible for that room. A faculty NIS account is required to use the faculty workstation.  Tutorials areavailable at http://www.calstatela.edu/tec.

Please contact the ITS Help Desk at x6170 to have an ITS staff member paged to provide immediate assistance. Currently, ITS does not provide after hours hardware support for TECs.   

ITS has a staff member and manager on call for after hours (6pm weekdays and on weekends) for problems associated with the network and/or network servers. Faculty should call x2630 to have the ITS staff on call paged.

MS Office support is included on the faculty workstations: MS Press Office 2003 Step-by-Step Interactive (includes Outlook 2003 and FrontPage 2003) http://www.calstatela.edu/training.

Student Administration

You can apply for a GET SA account at the Help Desk in the Library Palmer Wing Lobby or submit the form online at http://www.calstatela.edu/its/forms/get_account/.

We will issue a notice of the exact date during the fall quarter.

No. All information from OASIS will be updated nightly in Student Administration (SA).

The Registrar's Office has set up a special e-mail account for problems of this nature. The address is getaa@cslanet.calstatela.edu. When you e-mail, be sure to provide the date and time you noticed the discrepancy and as much descriptive information as possible. 

You can contact the ITS Help Desk at extension 3-6170. They will see that your problem is reported to the appropriate person for resolution and ensure you receive a rapid response.
