Installation Prerequisites
McAfee VirusScan Users
Users of McAfee VirusScan need to upgrade to version 8.0 before installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Previous versions of this software are not compatible with SP2 and will cause your computer to become unstable. Cal State L.A. faculty and staff may download a free copy of McAfee VirusScan 8.0 from the McAfee VirusScan page. Students may download SP2 compatible anti-virus software from the Online Resources page.
Minimum System Requirements
To install Windows XP SP2, your computer must meet the following system requirements.
- 233 MHz processor
- 64 MB of RAM
- 1.8 GB of free hard disk space
- Microsoft Windows XP*
* Not all versions of Windows XP can be updated with SP2. Visit the Microsoft Minimum System Requirements page for a full list of system requirements, including a list of all applicable operating systems.
What Microsoft Advises
To get your computer ready for Windows XP SP2, Microsoft advises to follow these steps.
- Back up your important files, such as documents, pictures, music, etc.
- Check your computer for spyware and other unwanted software.
- Check for SP2 update instructions from your computer's manufacturer.
