Desktop Protection
The best defense against virus attacks is to install an anti-virus software on your computer and keep it up-to-date.
If you need a PDF reader, you can download Adobe Reader for free.
On Campus
In an effort to protect our University network from viruses and other computer threats, each University workstation that has the Desktop Services Software (DSS) installed includes McAfee anti-virus software that is continuously being updated with the latest virus definitions. PC workstations should have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i or higher installed, and Macintosh workstations should have McAfee VirusScan 8.6 or higher installed. Check the anti-virus software version number on your workstation to make sure it is up-to-date. If the anti-virus software needs to be updated or if your workstation does not have the DSS image and you would like to have it installed, contact your college ITC.
The McAfee anti-virus software automatically monitors each workstation to safeguard it against viruses regardless of how they attempt to break in. If a virus is detected on your workstation, an alert dialog box will appear providing information about where the infected file is located and the name of the virus it detected. You can attempt to clean the file, but if it cannot be cleaned, you should delete the file and restore it from a backup copy.
Although the McAfee anti-virus software is continuously scanning your workstation, you can perform a manual or on-demand scan on any file, folder, or drive when necessary. Please refer to your VirusScan's Product Guide for instructions (PC | MAC).
Off Campus
All Cal State L.A. faculty, staff, and students should take active measures in protecting their home computers from virus attacks. Information Technology Services (ITS) has obtained a site license to make McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i for Windows and McAfee VirusScan 8.6 for Macintosh available to faculty and staff for home use. Students may obtain free anti-virus software and scanning tools from several online resources.
