24-hour Open Access Lab

Project Description

In an effort to increase the availability of computing resources to students, the Simpson Tower Annex Open Access Lab (OAL) was converted to a 24x7 computing lab.  The lab is available throughout the quarter and finals week, but closed during quarter breaks.  The student success fee enabled hiring of one full-time staff and additional student assistants, as required, to support the lab during the overnight shift (10 p.m. to 9 a.m.) and weekend shift.

Project Timeline

Business processes were defined and implemented during the summer 2014 quarter and the OAL was available to students on the first day of fall 2014 classes.

Student Benefits

Students who do not have personal computing devices at home or simply want to study on-campus, meet with peers, or practice one more trial run of a presentation, now have a place to do that whenever they choose.

The Simpson Tower Annex OAL is equipped with both a Group Study Room and a Smart Room.  The group study room has a conference table and chairs, and provides a perfect venue for class projects and group discussions.  The smart room is a multi-purpose room specifically designed for meetings, discussions and presentations, including workstation and presentation hardware and software configured similarly to campus lecture halls and Technology Enhanced Classrooms (TECs).  The smart room is equipped with two networked computers (one PC and one Macintosh), a multimedia data projector, VCR, DVD and document camera.
