Health Careers Evaluation Committee (HCEC) Letter

At this time, the university is NOT writing committee letters.

About the HCEC

The Health Careers Evaluation Committee (HCEC) is composed of current Cal State LA faculty who will evaluate an applicant's complete application package and potentially write a committee letter endorsing their application to health professional schools. The committee letter summarizes all of the information in your file, including details about your personal history especially any challenges you may have overcome, academic performance, and your extracurricular activies such as clinical, volunteer, and research experiences. The letter also includes salient comments from the recommendation letters provided. The end result is a comprehensive summary, and a letter indicating a strong endorsement.

Documents Needed

The list of required documents to provide to be considered for HCEC Committee Letter includes:

  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  • Minimum of 3 Letters of Recommendation (the same letters you are sending to AMCAS, etc.)
  • Copy of the completed health professions application (PDF version preferred)
  • National Exam Score (DAT, MCAT, etc.)
  • Unofficial Copies of transcripts from all college attended (including CSULA)

Please note that in order to be evaluated, the applicant must submit all of the documents requested above.

Process and Timeline

The HCEC meets during the first week of each month during the Fall and Spring semesters. To be considered by the committee, turn in all requested materials to HCAO by the end of the preceding month. For example, if you want to be evaluated for the month of July, you need to have all documents emailed in by the last day in June. Please note that no late documents will be accepted. You can email all the documents at [email protected] with the subject "Committee Letter Request" - pdf documents preferred.  The only exception are the letters of recommendation (LOR), which in order to preserve confidentiality, should not pass through the applicant at any time.  Students should either select a third-party storing service such as interfolio to provide letters of recommendation to the Health Careers Advisement Office, or have faculty email their letter of recommendation directly to [email protected] (signed and on letterhead).

You should allow two weeks for the Health Careers Evaluation Committee to evaluate your application package and write your committee letter, if they decide to endorse your application. Consider your deadlines when planning to complete your file, as the HCEC will not review an appliation packet until all documents listed above are complete and submitted.

Students not endorsed by the HCEC may continue to use the other HCAO services. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions regarding the committee letter.
