Additional Information

Enrollment in Thesis/Dissertation Courses

Follow your department's requirements for enrolling in thesis/dissertation courses (master's candidates: 5950, 5970, 5900 courses; doctoral candidates: 6990 courses; all candidates: UNIV 9000).

Thesis/Dissertation Proposal

The Office of Graduate Studies does not require the submission of a proposal for the thesis, project, or dissertation. Check with your department or college for their requirements around the proprosal.

Request for Thesis and Project Committee or Title (GS-12 Form)

Establish an approved committee and thesis/dissertation title as required by your college. The names and signatures on your GS-13 Form must match those on the GS-12; if your committee members change, check with your college about the procedure to update your GS-12.

Enrollment in University 9000

Starting Spring Semester 2017, graduate students who have completed all coursework for their degree program but not the thesis or dissertation may enroll in University (UNIV) 9000 through the College of Professional and Global Programs. The fee for this course is much reduced from the full-time semester enrollment fee. Enrollment in UNIV 9000 provides the student with very limited access to Cal State LA facilities and no access to student employment or student funding.

Winter Intercession and Summer Session

Students may not file the thesis or dissertation during Winter Intercession.

Students who wish to file the thesis or dissertation during Summer Session must be enrolled in the appropriate thesis/dissertation course and pay the required fee for that course.

Apply for Graduation

Students must apply for graduation well in advance of the date they wish to graduate; the Graduation Application is due to the Graduation Office by the deadline stated on their website. Failure to meet the published deadlines will result in the assessment of a late fee. Please visit the Graduation Office website for more information about the graduation application.

Final Defense

If a final defense or equivalent presentation is required as part of the student's culminating project, the defense must be completed by the last Friday of the semester (same deadline as GS-13 submission). Failure to do so will require re-enrollment in a future term.

Commencement Ceremony

Commencement Ceremonies for each college are held once each year, in May. Students who graduate in Summer 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017, and Summer 2017 will be eligible to walk in Commencement ceremonies in May 2017; Fall 2017 graduates will be eligible to walk in the May 2018 ceremonies. The Cal State LA Commencement website is a great resource for details about dates, times, locations, tickets, programs, grad fair, and more.

Diplomas and Transcripts

The Graduation Office oversees the awarding of degrees and processing of diploma requests. Please visit the Graduation Office website for more information about your diploma.

Students may order and pay for an official transcript online or in person. Please visit the University Records Office website for more information about transcripts.
