Jennifer Hicks, Director

Jennifer HicksJennifer Hicks, M.A. Ms. Hicks has a Masters of Arts in English Literature and a Certificate in Composition and Rhetoric from CSULA. She teaches composition for the English Department, the Honors College, and the First Year Experience (FYE) program. In the past she has taught for the University Writing Center and the Criminal Justice program. She has served on the Composition Committee, as the Pilot Stretch Composition Program coordinator, and on the One Campus One Book committee.  Additionally, she currently serves as a WPE grader; she works as the Early Start 31 coordinator; and she directs the Early Start Academy.

As a leader in the FYE program, she serves as the Director; she conducts the Pen Pal project; and she coordinates the First Year Experience Reading (FYER) project.


HildaHilda Basulto-Morales, Office Manager

Hilda's professional title is Administrative Support Coordinator of the First Year Experience program; however, Hilda is our FYE mom. Hilda is a Los Angeles native and has been a part of the Cal State LA community since 2007. She is a mother to four beautiful children whose ages range from 4 to 19 years old. In fact, her 19 year old son, Andrew, is a current Cal State LA student who has an affection for poetry and music. Her daughter attends STERN MASS high school located on campus and her two youngest are in elementary school. Hilda has previously held positions in the office of Undergraduate Studies. Now as a member of the First Year Experience team, she is happy to help any student who walks in to the FYE office. Former FYE Team Spotlight

Uriel Serrano

Uriel SerranoUriel Serrano was born in Los Angeles to parents from Durango, Mexico and grew up in the Crenshaw District. He was a graduate student in the Sociology department where his thesis explored the experiences of Black and Latino men with the campus racial climate at Cal State LA. A thesis that was highly shaped by the experiences of many of the FYE students he worked it. Uriel also earned his BA in Sociology with a minor in Chicano/a Studies here at Cal State-LA. Uriel joined the team fall 2013 as a graduate student assistant and ever since loved the program, its students, and his co-workers. During his time with FYE, Uriel was a seminar leader, member of various campus committees, a committee member of the Men of Color Success Network, and was elected to serve on committees of the American Sociological Association and the Pacific Sociological Association. Outside of Cal State LA, Uriel was involved with various organizations that provided social and academic resources for K-12, community college, and CSU students. We are proud to announce that Uriel will now be at the University of California, Santa Cruz as a PhD student. He is pursuing a doctorate degree in Sociology with an emphasis in education and critical race and ethnic studies. Jennifer Artiga

Jennifer ArtigaJennifer Artiga was born in Los Angeles, California. She attended California State University, Los Angeles as a first year college student right after graduating from John A. Rowland High School in 2012. Jennifer worked as a student assistant with The First Year Experience Program since Fall 2013 and graduate with a B.A. in Child Development this past Spring 2016. She will be pursuing a graduate education soon and has a huge passion for animals. In fact, she is using her love for animals to begin a pet care home in Los Angeles.
