She is currently an associate professor in the Department of Chicano Studies at California State University, Los Angeles She has been the Faculty Development coordinator for the NSS Introduction to Higher Education pilot course and a faculty coordinator for the peer mentoring program, Partnership for Academic Learning and Success. She has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at UCLA’s School of Medicine. She graduated from UC Irvine and completed her Ph.D. in Education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research focuses on the dynamics of culture and inequality in education and the intersections of race, class and gender in the experiences of Chicanas/Latinas and other women of color. Areas of expertise include college choice, college preparation utilizing lenses of resistance theory and critical race theory. Her recent publications include: a book review of Critical Race Counterstories Along The Educational Pipeline in the Journal of Latinos and Education and a research article, “Chicanas and Transformational Resistance: Analyzing College Aspirations within the Family Context” (2007) in the anthology, Introduction To Ethnic Studies Second Edition. “Chicana Student Navigation Of Ideal And Real Gender Roles: Familia, The Pursuit Of Higher Education And Resistance” in La Familia Chicana, Ed. Nancy Porras-Hein:, Kendall/Hunt and “Chicana Resistance: Fostering College Aspirations”, (2003) in Chicana/o Studies Reader: Abridge to Writing, Ed. Roberto Orona-Cordova. She is also known for her work on establishing the Symposium, Chicana/o Resistance in Education, which bridges both areas of Chicana/o Studies, and Education.
