Final Exam Study Questions
There will be multiple choice questions very similar to ones asked on the tests. There will be short answer questions very similar to ones asked on the tests. There will also be longer essay questions. Here are some examples:
(1) Discuss your self-identity in terms of one of the following features: gender, race, sexuality, class. Draw on the class discussion of the different aspects of self-identity. In what ways does this feature advantage you in terms of The Game. Draw on one article discusses in class to elucidate your discussion.
(2) Discuss the concept of the Game. Explain how it applies to two of the following areas: intersexuality, intersectionality, sexual orientation, sexual violence.
(3) Euthyphro defines piety as that which is loved by all the gods and Socrates provides an objection to it. Discuss this objection. Explain how it is relevant to understanding the relationship between God and morality (as in our class discussion of morality and homosexuality).
(4) Explain the views of C. Jacob Hale (about the category ‘woman’) and Mills (about race). How are these views similar? How are they different? Discuss.
(5) Mills defends a constructivist understanding of race. How might one defend a similar position about gender? What would a gender realist be? A gender relativist? Discuss.
(6) Explain Garry’s analysis of pornography. How might some of her ideas be used to analyze dating ritual and (hetero) sexual interaction? What relevance does this have to the article “Is Rape Sex or Violence?”
(7) What is moral relativism? Explain the argument that we should not accept moral relativism. Explain the view that God MAKES morality. How are some of the difficulties with this position similar to the difficulties with moral relativism?
(8) Why might somebody argue that homosexuality is morally wrong? (Discuss BOTH the “unnatural” argument and the appeal to scripture).
(9) Drawing on Crenshaw, explain the concept of intersectionality. How does this concept apply in Trujillo’s discussion of the fear of lesbians within Chicano communities. How does this concept apply to Hopkins’ account of homophobia?
(0) Is it ever possible to step outside of The Game? Is it possible to resist the Game?
