INTRODUCTION
Thomas W. Barkley, Jr., DSN, APRN,BC, ACNP is an Associate Professor of Nursing and Coodinator of the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Barkley’s clinical background and practice are in critical and acute care nursing where he holds national certification as an acute care nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

TEACHING INTERESTS
Dr. Barkley's teaching interests are in acute and critical care nursing, health assessment and promotion, and pharmacology for advanced practice nurses. Currently, he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in acute/critical care, as well as health assessment and promotion courses in the BSN, RN-BSN and MSN programs.

RESEARCH
In addition to his classroom and practice responsibilities, Dr. Barkley is the primary editor of the American Journal of Nursing Book-of-the-Year award-winning text, Practice Guidelines for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners, now in its second edition. Culminating in practice guidelines for acute care nurse practitioners, this work includes extensive synthesis, analyses and meta-analyses of medical, nursing and related-field literature, reflecting state-of-the-art evidence-based research, national/governmental recommendations, the latest approved medications and approaches to caring for acutely ill adults. He has also published numerous refereed articles related to acute care nursing practice, nursing education, and multicultural HIV/AIDS prevention. For the past several years, Dr. Barkley has been particularly involved in disseminating research through national refereed presentations, especially in the area of advanced practice pharmacology.
