CIS485 Local Area Networks (4) Prerequisite: CIS 484 or permission of instructor. Spring 2013 Time: Thursdays 6:10pm-10:00pm Location: Salazar Hall, Room C259 Instructor: Office hours: Tuesday 3:15pm-4:15pm, 6:15-7:15pm & Thursday 2:15pm-4:15pm.

This course will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how to design and manage local area networks.
Current network types and evolving networking technologies are introduced, wich include Ethernet networks, router configuration,
TCP/IP networks, routing protocols, local & campus network configuration, network security, the network server, etc. Students will learn
about the equipments and technologies used in LANs and popular protocols and common network services. Hands-on projects will provide
studednts with real experience in using some of the tools involved in network design, analysis, implementation, and troubleshooting.

3. Transmission Basics and Networking Media (Data & Signal, Modulation, Multiplexing,
Throughput and Bandwidth, Conducted Media, Wireless Meida)
4. TCP/IP networks
5. Connecting LANs, Backbone Networks, and Virtual LANs
6. Router & Swich Configuration
7. Routing Protocols
8. Network Security (Principles of Cryptography, Message Integrity and End-Point Authentication,
Network Operating System Security, Securing wireless LANs)
9. Internet Security (Network Layer Security: IPsec and VPNs, Securing TCP Connections: SSL,
Application Layer Security, Firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems)
10. Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution (Methodology, Hardware and Software Tools)
Grading:
There will be homework assignments, the mid-term exam, and
the final exam. A final grade will be determined using the following weights: Homework and Hands-on project 12%, Mid-term Exam 42%, Final Exam 44%,
Class participation and attendance 2%. Homework assignments must be done individually. Failure to
do so will result in a violation of the Academic Honor Code. The following cases will be considered
as violations: identical answers and extremely similar answers. Make-up exams will be given and late assignments
accepted only in unusual circumstances beyond the student's control. Arrangements for make-up exams or late
assignments must be made in advance.
Attendance Policy:
Attendance is mandatory. Send the instructor
(sxing@calstatela.edu) email in advance if you have to miss a class due to emergency or sickness.
Exams:
The tentative date for the mid-term is May 9, Wednesday, 6:10pm-8:00pm.
The final exam is scheduled for Jun 13, Wednesday, 7:30pm-10:00pm. |
