INTRODUCTION
Professor Slovacek is a tenured Full Professor in the Division of Applied and Advances Studies in Education in the Charter College of Education. Duties include teaching, research, scholarship, advisement, research and evaluation project grants and contracts administration, and charter schools creation. His areas of expertise include charter schools, research and evaluation methodology, testing, statistics, and technology in Education. He helped to start the successful Masters program in Computer Education; obtained several technology grants, and has worked on dozens of evaluation grants/contracts. He has also authored or co-authored over forty funded grant proposals at the University, public agencies and school districts in the last 20 years (these have been funded for more than a cumulative total in excess of $30,000,000). Currently Professor Slovacek serves as Principal Investigator on a $1.7 million dollar NIH RO1 grant and evaluator on NEA grant (with LA Music Center), First 5 LA and City of Hope funded projects. Previously funded projects include the evaluation of the Los Angeles Annenberg Metropolitan Project, NASA/JPL STEP program, drug prevention education/safety programs, Head Start, Healthy Start, AmeriCorp programs, and the expansion of the Accelerated and Charter schools in Los Angeles.
Currently he serves as a founding charter school board member on three non-profit organizations. These include The Accelerated School board, The Inner City Education Foundation board (for View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter Schools), and The School of Arts and Enterprise board. Beginning 1994 and in his capacity as a trustee, he played an instrumental role starting seven new and highly successful charter schools currently serving over 2,500 K-12 children. Their annual operating budgets exceed $20,000,000/year (as board member, he has a fiduciary responsibility for all of these schools.)
