People with special exercise
needs often find it difficult to exercise because of their unique requirements
and challenges. To begin finding exercise solutions for people with
special exercise needs, the Mobility Gym was established by the Kinesiology
and Nutritional Science Department at California State University, Los Angeles.
Since 2001, the Mobility Gym has helped many different individuals
with stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, visual
impairments, polio, etc., participate in a therapeutic exercise program. The
“clients” receive one-on-one assistance from a student assistant under the
guidance of Kinesiology faculty and have access to adapted exercise devices such
as hand cycles, standing frames, and adapted weight training devices. To
participate, the clients enroll in a 10-week activity course. The student
assistants are Kinesiology students who enroll in a Kinesiology course,
"Principles of Mobility Training" where they learn how to implement
stretching, weight training, aerobic, etc., exercises for individuals with
special needs.
