INTRODUCTION
After teaching in the Charter College of Education since 1993, I have become Professor Emeritus. However, I continue to teach and write in my field which is, broadly speaking, literacy education. Before teaching a Cal State Los Angeles, I taught twenty-five years in public high schools. During my years of teaching at CSULA, I taught in the Single Subject Credential Program and helped to coordinate the M.A. in Middle and Secondary Curriculum and Instruction.
TEACHING INTERESTS
During the past few years, my teaching has focused on content area reading and writing, cognitive processes of emergent and developing readers, and aspects of motivation and engagement in reading.
RESEARCH
When in graduate school at UC, Berkeley, I was primarily interested in cognitive processes in reading and writing. That interest continues to pervade much of my work. For example, I have written Content Area Reading and Writing: Fostering Literacies in Middle and High School Cultures and co-edited Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading (5th and 6th Editions). I have also been doing research and writing on literacy motivation and engagement. In addition, I have been involved in research related to the Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) designed primarily for high school seniors, a federally funded i3 grant to explore ERWC's impact on student performance in college, and ERWC's expansion into the middle and high school English curriculum.
