Links on Consciousness,
Mind, and Cognition.
Probably the best places to begin your search for material on
the mind, consciousness, and cognition are the
Open Directory Project pages on:
Philosophy
of Mind - Cognitive
Science - Consciousness Studies.
The Open Directory Project pages provide much
more comprehensive collections of links than this page does. I know because
I help edit them! Since Yahoo!® has gone commercial, the Mozilla
Open Directory Project (compiled by thousands of volunteer
editors) is probably the best general web directory for serious scientific or
scholarly research (and for many other things too). Many of the well known commercial
search sites now base their directories on ODP data, but the
most up-to-date (and, usually, the fastest loading) version can always be found
at the home site: http://dmoz.org
- N.J.T.T.
Or you can consult HIPPIAS,
the Philosophy Search Engine.
Use * for substring searches. Plat*
will return entries for Plato, Platonism, Platonic, etc. Two or more
search words will return entries containing "Word1" AND "Word2", not the phrase
"Word1 Word2".
Some of my favorite
philosophy of mind, consciousness, and cognition sites
(in no particular order):
- Science and Consciousness
Review
Frequently updated news and views about scientific research on
consciousness.
- Behavioral and Brain
Sciences Online
Behavioral and Brain Sciences
is the leading cognitive science journal. This site gives free access to virtually
all the target articles it has published, going back many years. Some additional
services require free registration. Unfortunately what makes the print journal
especially valuable, the peer commentaries on the target articles and the target
authors' replies, are not available online.
- CogPrints
Searchable and browsable electronic Archive of published and unpublished
papers in the cognitive sciences and related fields.
- The Human Nature
Daily Review
Links to the latest on-line news items in Psychology, Cognitive
Science, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Anthropology, Primatology, and the other Human
Sciences. Updated daily!
- The MIT Encyclopedia
of Cognitive Science
Now they make you buy the books to read the full articles, but there
is still free online access to abstracts and bibliographies of the entries, after
a fairly painless registration process. Contains an entry on imagery by Kosslyn
& Rabin.
- Dave Chalmers'
Home Page
Extensive annotated bibliographies of the philosophy of mind and
of the science of consciousness, his own influential writings, Zombies on
the Web, comprehensive links to other philosophers' online papers in philosophy
of mind, etc.
- Non-Cartesian
Cognitive Science.
Many helpfully categorized links and writings concerning embodied/situated
approaches to cognition.
- Dictionary
of Philosophy of Mind
Peer reviewed entries are still being added, but this is being built
up into a high quality professional resource. Edited by Chris Eliasmith.
- Folk Psychology vs. Mental Simulation: How Minds Understand
Minds
Papers from or relating to Robert Gordon's Simulation Theory
of Folk Psychology: relevant to understanding interpersonal understanding,
empathy, the nature and origins of mental concepts, the causes of autism, etc.
Articles by Gordon, Stich, and others.
- Consciousness
and the Brain.
Annotated bibliography of the neuroscience and philosophy of consciousness,
by Ralph Ellis & Natika Newton.
- "Mind/Brain
Rescources" by Valerie Gray Hardcastle.
Useful links on mind and cognition, from a well known cognitivist
philosopher.
- "The Brain
Project."
Forums and papers on consciousness (inspired by the Tucson
II conference).
- The Association for the
Scientific Study of Consciousness.
The premier scientific organization in the field.
- Toward
a Science of Consciousness.
Abstracts of papers presented at the Tucson II, Tucson
III, and Tucson 2000 conferences, and other recent consciousness conferences.
Plus links to press reports on the Tucson conferences.
- Center
for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona.
Currently the premier institutional center for Consciousness Studies.
Host of the Tucson Toward a Science of Consciousness conferences,
and periodically stages on-line courses on aspects of Consciousness Studies.
