Teaching Interests:
Have taught a wide variety of classes including General Microbiology, General Medical Microbiology, Pathogenic Bacteriology, Hematology,
General Virology, Molecular Diagnostics and several Graduate Seminars.
Research Interests:
Protein transport using virus model systems, virus budding and assembly, viral fusion, and viral pathogenesis are the topics of research. Many recombinant DNA techniques as well as tissue culture and protein expression and analysis are used in the research.
Grants:
Since being hired as an Asistant Professor at CSULA in 1989, have been the recipient of over $1.3 million in research grants from the National Institutes of Health. Have also received numerous internal grants for research, teaching and graduate student support.
Publications:
Have been an author on many journal publications including some in the following prestigious journals: Journal of Virology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
Abstracts and Presentations:
Have participated in numerous oral and poster presentations, including 22 which were coauthored by students at California State University, Los Angeles.
Graduate Student Research Associates:
Have directed the research of 30 Masters students, 15 of whom have already received the M.S. degrees. Two of these students have earned Ph.D.s, five are currently in Ph.D. programs, one is in medical school, four have positions as research associates in either academia or industry, one is a high school teacher in the L.A. area, and two returned to their native countries where they are teachers.
Undergraduate Research Students:
Have directed the research of eight undergraduate students, four of whom have received their B.S. degrees. Two of these students have continued as Masters students in my lab and the other two have positions in industry where they utilize their degrees and research experience.
High School Students:
Have directed six high school students in summer research in my lab.
University Service:
Have been a member and chair of numerous committees at the department, School and University levels. Have served as the principle graduate and principle undergraduate advisor and have served as a mentor for a new faculty member in the department.
Outreach:
Have been involved in many outreach programs including serving as judge at the state science fair and teaching hands-on summer workshops in biotechnology to K-16 teachers.
Scientific and Professional Society memberships:
Am a member of several professional societies including the American Society of Microbiology, the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
