The MSIS Program


 

Overview

 

The Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) is designed to provide managers and professionals the necessary technical and managerial skills needed to fulfill the responsibilities of senior professional and project management positions in the Information Systems/Technology field.  The MSIS degree program is organized into two Options, namely the Professional Option (PMSIS) and the Executive Option (EMSIS). This website is desgined to give the students the information pertaining the MSIS degree.

 

Professional Option (PMSIS)

 

The 45 Quarter unit Professional Option (PMSIS) is designed for managers and professionals working in the business information systems field. The option offers information systems professionals the background knowledge needed to move into senior planning, consulting, and project management positions.

 

Executive Option (EMSIS)

 

The 49 Quarter unit MSIS Executive Option (EMSIS) is designed for working executives, managers, and professionals who are interested in a career redirection or change into the business information systems/technology field. It is designed to provide persons currently employed in business and other types of organizations in management and operations positions, the education needed to obtain the professional and managerial knowledge and skills needed for senior level positions in information systems/information technology (IS/IT) user and support organizations, such as: consulting, user management, development planning and management, and data center operations.

 


 

Common Requirements for the Professional and Executive Options in MSIS Degree ( 13 of the 45 - 49 units required)

A total of 45 units of 500 level courses and a total of 49 units of 500 level courses are required for the Professional and the Executive Options respectively. Of this total requirement, a total of  13 units of  the following  common core courses is required for both the PMSIS and EMSIS options.

Required Common Core Courses (13 units) 

  • CIS 504 Information Systems (4).

  • CIS 585 Communication and Information Services (4)

  • CIS 590 IS/IT Policy and Strategy (4)

  • CIS 598 PROFESSIONAL PROJECT (1)


Additional Requirements for the PMSIS Option (32 units)

A total of 32 additional units of 500 level courses is required. The 32 unit requirement is further divided into 8 units of required courses and 24 units of elective courses that are described as follows:

PMSIS Option Required Courses (8 units)

  • CIS 510 IS/IT Architecture (4)

  • CIS 520 Software Engineering (4)

PMSIS Option Elective Courses (24 units)

The students required to select 24 units (six courses) with prior graduate adviser approval.


Additional requirements for the EMSIS Option (36 units)

A total of 36 additional units of 500 level courses is required. The 32 unit requirement is further divided into 8 units of required courses and 24 units of elective courses that are described as follows:

EMSIS Option Required Courses (12 units)

  • CIS 501 Application Programming (4)

  • CIS 502 Analyses and Logical Design I: Data/Object Structures (4)

  • CIS 503 Analysis and Logical Design II: Methodology (4)

EMSIS Option Elective Courses (24 Units)

The students are required to select 24 units (six courses) with prior graduate adviser approval.
