My background is in counseling psychology and school administration. I am a licensed clinical psychologist, hold credentials in school counseling, child welfare and attendance and school administration. I am a parent and parent educator with commitments to parent involvement in education. During my 14 years at CSULA I have been involved in community projects involving school-based mental health, cultural diversity and community mobilization.
I hold a joint appintment in counseling and school administration and have taught in both departments. Currently I teach in the school counseling program and coordinate the Counseling and Educational Leadership Option (CEL). I also developed the Intercultural Proficiency Certificate Program and helped develop the Parenting Certificate Program in the College of Health and Human Services. I teach occassionally in both certificate programs.
I am the current Principal Investigator in the Intercultural Proficiency Project, a W.K. Kellogg Foundation-funded program in collaboration with Portland State University, the American Red Cross and other non-profit, public benefit organizations. This project helps non-profit organizations become better equipped to respond to demographic shifts in our communities. I have also conducted research with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing on school violence, conflict resolution, parental involvement in education and cultural copetence. I am active amd contribute to several divisions of the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the Western States Psychological Association and the National Institute for School-Based Family Counseling.
