Information about the textbook: This custom edition was created by taking chapters from the book Beginning and Intermediate Algebra by Elayn Martin-Gay (ISBN-10: 0321785126, ISBN-13: 978-0321785121) as well as from the book Geometry: Fundamental Concepts and Applications by Alan Bass (ISBN-10: 0321473310, ISBN-13: 978-0321473318). This is the same book used in the Early Start classes ESM 031A: Intro to Algebra, Part 1 and ESM 031A: Intro to Algebra, Part 2. The custom edition we use for Math 90 and Math 91 was also created with pages from Beginning and Intermediate Algebra by Elayn Martin-Gay (ISBN-10: 0321785126, ISBN-13: 978-0321785121).
If you purchase a MathXL account, it comes with all of the pages from Beginning and Intermediate Algebra by Elayn Martin-Gay except the pages with exercises. The MathXL account is good for 12 months. A MathXL access code comes along with the custom edition at no extra charge, if you buy it new at the bookstore, so don’t throw that access code away, in case you need it for Math 90 or 91.
General course description
This course will cover basic concepts in algebra. Prerequisites: None
Topical outline: Fractions, signed numbers, measurement geometry, absolute value, simplifying algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities. These topics correspond to the following sections in the textbook: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.8, Geometry Section 7, Geometry Section 8 (skip the section on “Sectors and Arc Length”), Geometry Section 9
Student learning outcomes: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Perform numerical computations involving fractions, signed
numbers, and absolute value
- Apply laws of (positive integer) exponents
- Find the GCD and LCM of a finite set of integers
- Add and subtract polynomials
- Solve linear equations

Students must check their CSULA email account regularly for information from the instructor and the Department. Failure to do so may result in missed deadlines or other consequences that might adversely affect students. Note that you can forward this email account to any other account of your choosing.
Exit exams: Beginning Fall 2012, there is a new policy for math exit exams. Under the new rule, you may take exit exams before you begin taking math classes at CSULA. Once you begin taking math classes at CSULA, though, you may not take exit exams any more, with some exceptions. The full policy is posted outside the Math Dept. office on the second floor of Simpson Tower.
Your next math class: After you pass Math 89 this quarter, you are required to take Math 90 next quarter. Please remember that you are required to pass Math 89, Math 90, and Math 91 within your first year at CSULA.
