Roughing It!

On the morning of July 11, 2004 NASA SHARP 2004 Cal State L.A. embarked on a great journey. The experience was extensive and some didn’t even know if we would make it through that day.  We went to the unforgiving L.A. Crest to go hiking and to have a picnic.  The weather was harsh and the sky was blue, but no one knew what we were about to do.  As we arrived to the callous place we noticed it was no palace.  Dirt on the ground, bugs in the air, allergens all around, the tissues came out and we begun on our route.

The trail was not very populated and it was seldom that we had to swing from trees and jump over the quicksand or dangerous rapids.  Our group stayed together throughout the entire trip never leaving a member behind.  Unfortunately it was not the same for over groups.  We passed many people having to stop to rest and have their super sized Big Mac’s and $0.64’s.

The difficulty and rough environment of the trail did not truly become present to me until we had our first member injured.  We heard multiple sharp screams fly through the air.  We looked down to our fallen member and saw him squalling; frightened and hurt so we rushed to his attention.  His face was so pale and he looked as if he had just died a dreadful death.  This brave member was in a pond of water that stood a great four feet tall.  He was allergic to water and must have slipped into the pond accidentally. We dragged the young man out of the water to see the only apparent injury was to his loins.  The event is still frightful to think of and we all must remember it for future safety.

The trip was quite a physical experience for some of us.  With no McDonald’s in sight the trip was very dramatic for a few. Kennedy said, “It was a good work out, especially the paved road part.”  Andrea said, “It was goooooood.” I found the trip to be too slow.  In the future I feel Sharpies will not enjoy the trip because the trail lacked a good night life.
