Music Hall/Garment District/Chinatown Fun Activity 2004 NASA SHARP Program California State University, Los Angeles Reported by: Kennedy Nofoagatoto'a
The Saturday Adventure!
The first event took place downtown covering the Music Center. Where we saw a lot of magnificent architect buildings. The group waited patiently for their tour guide by observing the Statue of Peace, where water was squirting out of the ground to form beautiful scenery. Others like Aditi and Raj just started playing with the water to keep them occupied and cool from the hot sun.
When Mrs. Pitsa arrived she greeted us and was very excited to start our tour. At 10:30 our tour started. We were shown a lot of magnificent and fascinating paintings and also carved self-portraits of the distinguish men which the buildings are dedicated to. Mrs. Pitsa then took us into several auditoriums where we actually got to see the set up and the way they designed the stages to appear realistic. After seeing all the auditoriums we then had a break in this very eloquent room, which Mrs. Pitsa told us that Queen Elizabeth was once there. We then headed to the Walt Disney Music Center, where we first saw a model of the auditorium inside Walt Disney that we did not get to see in person. There we bided farewell to Mrs. Pitsa and thanked her for the amazing tour.
I think that the tour was very expressive, because of the way Mrs. Pitsa explained in details the history of the Music Center. When asked Travis about his thoughts of the Music Center he said, “the Music Center was quite a site”. I think everybody learned on that day a lot of new things. Andrea said,” It was a very good experience”.
I think Garment District was fun and exciting walking around and meeting new people. Some students were very happy about the bargains they got for their clothes like Andrea. I asked her if she liked it and she said “Yes I really like the clothes and also their price”. Travis and Raj said with a grin on their faces “Yup we liked it there especially the legal DVDs”.
Then our final stop was Chinatown, which was very unique and fun, because of the two Dragons facing each other making a huge door like structure, which was the entrance. We also got a chance to see the famous restaurant where the movie Rush Hour was shot at.
I think the trip to Chinatown was great, because some people have never been to China like me, got to experience the kind feeling they would get if they went to China. This trip also helped us appreciate their culture more. Most of us bought souvenirs, like Raj who bought a little Chinese knife, which was pretty cool. But most of us enjoyed Chinatown by walking around and observing things we never saw before. I think that these three places that we went to were very amazing and also a good experience for some of us and I think they should have this Enrichment Activity again next year. If I happened to come back to L.A., I would visit these places again and see if it had changed or not.
