Movie Stars

California: The land of sun, sand, and stars. Movie stars that is. So of course, the NASA SHARP experience would not be complete without catching a glimpse of a few movie celebrities. Well, maybe not in person per se, but projected onto an enormous movie screen they seem lifelike, don’t they? OK, so none of us actually got see a real live movie star (except for the Jay Leno show), but our two trips to the movies still gave each sharpie a chance to experience the true Hollywood atmosphere.

On July 2nd, we went to a movie theatre and were given the opportunity to see The Stepford Wives or The Terminal. Most opted to see The Terminal starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta Jones.  Now I must mention that two of our sharpies, who have asked to remain nameless, accidentally entered the wrong theatre. Although they should have noticed all the young children in what they thought was a PG-13 movie they paid no attention and began to watch what they thought was The Terminal. After watching 10 minutes of tigers playing in the rainforest they decided to check to see if they were in the right theatre. Much to their embarrassment, they walked out and saw the sign for Two Brothers, a Disney movie about two Siberian tigers and their journeys. They tried to slip into The Terminal inconspicuously but were soon noticed by the other sharpies and underwent some well-deserved harassment. Maybe ACT scores aren’t a true measure of intelligence.

On July 30th we took our second trip to the movies at the Pasadena Mall. Some had to put their fears behind them as the entire group went to see the movie The Village. While most of the group didn’t feel that the movie was very frightening, a few still exited the theatre with goose bumps on their necks. We were permitted to view two movies that evening so the group then split up to see different films such as the hilarious comedy Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, the action/adventure movie The Bourne Supremacy, the cheesy chick flick Cinderella Story, or the political action movie Manchurian Candidate.

After we regrouped and once again piled into our two vans, there was much discourse in the vans about the best, worst, most funny, and stupidest parts of each movie. Judging by the van conversations, I think it is fair to say that everyone thoroughly enjoyed each movie they saw as well as their chance to “see” the Hollywood movie stars.
