Jay Leno Show

Fun Activity

2004 NASA SHARP Program

There exists a multitude of late-night shows today in the United States, from “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” to “Last Call with Carson Daily”. But no other late-night show has the unique late-night style that Jay Leno has created with a combination of humor, talk and entertainment each night at 11:35 p.m. ET. Considered by many to be a “variety” show, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” features a nightly monologue and news-making guests, as well as ongoing comedy segments including “Headlines,” “Request Line,” “Tonight Show Side Show,” “Jaywalking” and “Battle of Jaywalking All-Stars.” The result is a unique look at today’s pop culture.

It’s hard to imagine what goes on behind the scenes of such television shows and even more unimaginable the constant tug-o-war between chaos, precision, and perfection, that everyone in the studio, even the audience, must take part in, in order to ensure that time flows along smoothly. Prior to the show even beginning, in an attempt to keep the audience at their toes, one of the producers of the show came out and teased the audience with giveaways and even called a few people down to the stage. One of the Sharpies, Alexis Laguna, was one of the lucky few that managed to get called down to dance on stage. For those of you who know Alexis, you can imagine the excitement at hand for both himself and his fellow Sharpies.

Many of the world’s most popular celebrities, musical guests and newsworthy names have recently appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, three of which the Sharpies were able to see on their visit. The first of the three was Denis Leary. With his charm and quick-witted humor he entertained the audience with a generally sarcastic conversation with Jay Leno regarding the Martha Stewart sentence. In addition to that Leary told Jay about playing a Manhattan firefighter in his new FX series, Rescue Me.

Soon after, Jay Leno introduced this year’s new Wimbledon tennis champion, the beautiful, seventeen-year-old superstar, Maria Sharapova. With this introduction came a first hand look at Maria Sharapova describing what it was like to beat a seemingly invincible Serena Williams at this year's Wimbledon. Also she gave her rags to riches story about the discovery of her talent and the inspiration and support that she received by her father to help her reach her present heights.

In addition to the star-power, the “Tonight Show” production team searches for the most interesting “civilian” guests such as kid inventors and individuals with quirky talents and funny stories. Maybe the most entertaining portion of the night came from The Tonight Show’s correspondent, Tom Green, and his “Most Interesting Person Search”. It’s basically a road trip that Tom Green is taking to every state in the United States to find the most interesting person. In this episode Tom took a visit to Arizona where he encountered not only a number of various interesting people, but a close encounter with an angry white buffalo. The variation of interesting people ranged from a girl with a taste for fists and a baby’s charm, to a group of rapist motorcycle Vikings, to hula-hoop dancer at one with nature. The show concluded with an outdoor musical performance by Velvet Revolver. With Scott Weiland flanked by Matt Sorum and Slash, the band and crowd got explosive with the song "Slither" from their debut disc, Contraband. It was definitely an “experience” to see them perform, and the sharpies for the most part jumped around, bopped their heads and waved their hands high to the rhythm of the music. Now whether they seemed so enthusiastic because they really enjoyed the music or they simply wanted to get on television is up to you to decide. Nonetheless it was an extremely enjoyable experience that all the Sharpies will come to remember.
