Getty Museum/UCLA

Fun Activity

2004 NASA SHARP Program

California State University, Los Angeles

Reported by: Tiffany Dinkins

A Day of Art and Tradition

The event took place at the Getty Museum and the campus of UCLA.  The students left the dorms of Cal. State L.A. around nine a.m. to embark on their trip.

As the vehicles approach the Getty Museum the air has a sense of excitements.  The students stare in amazements on the architectural structure of the museum.  The students load on to a tram to take them up to the top of the hill to where the museum is located.  They have approximately three hours to explore the paintings, sculptures, photographs, and gardens of the Getty Museum.  Coincidental all the students meet up at the garden and are astounded at the beauty of it. Most people would agree that the gardens were the most exciting things they saw.  Some of the students could be found at the Arts & Crafts center at the museum trying to imitate ancient tapestry with their own personalities.  When the decision was made to precede to the next location all the students left with a deeper appreciation of the arts and of the architecture of the museum.

The next stop of the day was the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).  As hopeful college bound students in one or two years this gave the students an excellent chance to see what a college campus was like.  It also provided for an up close and personal look at a prestigious college, such as UCLA.  The students looked at the two-tower building and the bell tower.  They were also able to explore the athletic facilitations as well as the game room in the UCLA main offices.  The students proceeded to play a variety of games.  After an eventful day the students all agreed it was time to depart for the dorms.

After loading into the vehicles, the children began to talk amongst themselves.  Mitch commented he liked UCLA because of the Dance Dance Revolution located in the game room.  While Jasmine Tirado stated, “the Getty museum had its good parts, like the renaissance paintings, the garden, and the photography section.”  It was a general consensus that the Getty Museum had the highlight of the day.  When asked what she liked most about the Getty Museum Katie Collier stated, “I loved the gardens!” Many of the students wished they could return to the museum for another visit in the future to see everything again.  At the end of the day everyone was happy about the trip and got something out of the experience.

I feel that the Getty Museum and the UCLA were excellent ways to spend my Saturday.  I enjoyed the Getty Museum and I felt I came away from the experience with a better appreciation of art and of the architectural structure of such a massive building.  I enjoyed the variety of artwork displayed in the museum as well as the layout of the museum.  At UCLA I enjoyed the building structure that surrounded me.  And getting to see a college, which  I might have not seen in my lifetime, up close and personal.  I felt that the day as a whole was great and if I had the option to do it again, I would without hesitation.  I would recommend this event for all future NASA Sharpies or anyone else.  If possible I would like to return to the Getty Museum on a later visit to California.
