LA Dodgers vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Fun Activity

2004 NASA SHARP Program

California State University, Los Angeles

Reported by: Aditi Shah

After a long day of enriching enrichment activities, Friday night, the NASA sharpies were taken out to the ball game, which started at 7:10 PM. It was Dodgers vs. the Phillies at the Dodgers Stadium where we were seated on the Pavilion level. We had a clear view of the field and the players as they made their homeruns and their strikeouts. But it wasn’t the Dodger’s night as they lost to the Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies had an early five-run lead built on four homers. Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a home run, one of four hit by Philadelphia in the first two innings against Kazuhisa Ishii. Bobby Abreu, Marlon Byrd and Placido Polanco also connected for the Phillies. Starting the final leg of a four-city, 13-game road trip, the Phillies won their fourth straight to match their longest winning streak this season. They have won seven in a row against the first-place Dodgers, including four this season, and are 18-5 against the NL West this year. Izturis fielded Byrd's leadoff grounder to shortstop in the 11th and pulled 6-foot-5 first baseman Hee Seop Choi off the bag with a high throw. Gagne (4-1) walked Rollins with one out, and Polanco loaded the bases with a single before Thome lined a single to center in his first career at-bat against Gagne for a 7-5 lead.

The game left many Dodgers fan disappointed as their rival team kept racking up points. Many people opted to buy souvenirs such as tiny baseball bats with Dodgers written on it, an inflatable baseball bat, a baseball with Dodgers written on it and Dodgers logo t-shirt just to name a few. Other attractions at the game were the cheerleaders from a local high school and one audience member that took it upon him self to be the conductor of the wave. There was a passionate Dodgers fan that was unable to contain his excitement and openly expressed in a verbal manner. His devotion to the Dodgers attracted an audience.

Unfortunately, the game was cut short for us since we left in the beginning of the ninth inning to avoid traffic and grab a bite to eat. Therefore, the conclusion of the game was heard on the radio. When the news spread to the sharpies, it was disappointing to know that the Dodger’s had lost in the extra innings. The final score was 9-5 in favor of the Phillies.
