- deficiency would cause anemia and nerve damage
- intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12
- less intrinsic factor as we age
- deficiency most likely in:
- elderly (lack intrinsic factor)
- vegans (B12 only in animal sources)
- infants born to vegan mothers
- infants breastfeeding from vegan mothers
