Vitamin K

• Necessary for normal blood clotting

• Dicumarol, an anti-vitamin K drug, is prescribed for those who need to “thin” their blood

• Sources:

  • dark green leafy vegetables, cabbage, liver
  • bacterial synthesis in digestive tract

• Deficiency rare:

  • infants cannot synthesize

• Toxicity possible from a synthetic form, so single vitamin available as a prescription only
