INTRODUCTION

TEACHING INTERESTS

I have a strong interdisciplinary orientation. I am also committed to active learning strategies in the classroom. I teach a large range of courses. My particular teaching interests include ethics, aesthetics, social/political philosophy, 18th-19th century European philosophy, and gender theory. I have taught special topics or graduate level courses in queer theory, film theory, communitarianism, identity politics and Freudian notions of identification, and the influence of Hegel's Master/Slave dialectics on 19th-20th century European philosophy.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My overarching interest is in the nature of meaning, particularly as it is manifested in art and lives. Current projects include a paper on gender theory in relation to 17th century Dutch still-life painting and a paper on the relationship between portraiture and self-knowledge.
