From 1997
to 1999, violist HUI LIU was a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was
assistant principal viola of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1995 to 1997.
Since joining the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1999, He has performed frequently
on the Chamber Music Society Series and the Green Umbrella new music series.
Hui Liu has also performed chamber music at the leading music festivals at
Marlboro, Tanglewood, Ravinia and Edinburgh£¬collaborated with such artists as
Hilary Hahn, Jamie Laredo, David Soyer, Peter Wiley, Masuko Ushioda and
Laurence Lesser. In March 2004, he made concerto debut with the Pasadena
Community Orchestra. In the upcoming season, he will perform concertos with Rio
Honda Symphony and Symphony Orchestra of California State University Los
Angeles.
Hui has been a faculty member at California State University Los Angeles since 2005. He has also taught and coached chamber music at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and coached viola sections at the New England Conservatory and the New World Symphony.
A native of Beijing, China, Liu began piano lessons with his mother at five and started violin lessons at seven. He attended Boston University, where he received an artist diploma as a student of Raphael Hillyer. Liu earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Michael Tree, Karen Tuttle, and Joseph de Pasquale, and coached with Felix Galimir.
