Materials: Science journals, chalkboard, bee worksheets.
Time: 40 minutes
Introduction: The teacher will review the parts of an insects body with the class. This will remind the students that an insect’s body has three parts, the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. The teacher will them ask the class if they think a bee is an insect. If the students do or do not guess it correctly, explain to them that a bees body also has three parts.
Development: The teacher will hand-out the worksheet with the
bee on it.
-The teacher will tape one copy of the worksheet to the chalkboard
and write the bee’s body
parts on the chalkboard next to the worksheet.
-The teacher will call on the students to come up and label the bee.
After a student labels a part of the bee’s body, they
must erase the part they labeled so it is not used again.
-If the students have trouble, the teacher will help label and explain
the body parts with the class.
-The students will then label their own bee at their seats.
-The teacher will then tell the students they are going to be drawing
their own honeybees according to their bee worksheets.
-The students will have to follow directions and design their own bee.
Closure: The teacher will ask the class to share their bee designs
with the class. The teacher will answer any questions the class may
have regarding bees.
Assessment: The students will be assessed with a check or a check-plus
on their bee labeling worksheet. The bee worksheets will be assessed
on whether or not the students followed directions. The teacher will
grade them on content as well as grammar.
