Goal: Students will listen, write, and speak for information and understanding about honeybees and their environment.
Objectives:
-Students will be able to describe the jobs of the queen bee, worker
bees, and male
bees.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level-Knowledge
-Students will be able to differentiate between the three types of
honeybees.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level-Analysis
-Students will be able to identify the six sided structure of a honeycomb
and what it
contains in it.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level-Knowledge
-Students will be able to sketch a honeycomb in their science journals.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level-Application
Materials: Science journals, chalkboard, Honeybees, by Jane Lecht, honey, Honeycomb cereal, “Honeycomb Addition” worksheet.
Time: 40 minutes
Introduction: To lead the students into this lesson the teacher will write descriptions of honeybees on the chalkboard, without telling them the insect. The students will make guesses as to what the insect is. The teacher will then tell the students they are going to learn about the honeybee and ask them what they know about honeybees.
Development:
-The teacher will then read Honeybees to the class.
-During the reading, the teacher will stop to explain important features
of the honeybees to the class and write them
on the chalkboard.
-Teacher will also explain the different types of honeybees. Example:
queen bee,
worker bee.
-The students will copy down the notes from the chalkboard into their
science journals.
-The teacher will then hand-out Honeycomb cereal for the students to
see. The cereal is in the shape of
a real honeycomb.
-The teacher will explain that a honeycomb has six sides and is made
from wax.
-The teacher will then let the students have a taste of honey on a
graham cracker, while explaining to them that the
honey comes from the honeycomb.
Closure: The teacher will review any questions the students have
on honeybees. If there is time the teacher will allow the students
to tell about a time they were stung by a bee. The students will
be assigned “Honeycomb Addition” for homework.
Assessment: The students will be assessed on their journal entries.
The teacher will formally assess the entries. The teacher will grade
for content as well as grammar. The “Honeycomb” worksheet will also
be graded as a math grade .
