Materials:  Science journals, chalkboard, Insects and Their Relatives, by Maurice Burton, “Observe an Insect” worksheet, Insect books from the school library.

Time: 40 minutes

Introduction:  To introduce the lesson to the class, read “What are Insects?” (Page 6-7) from book.  During the reading will be sure to emphasize important features of an insects body such as, it is cut into three parts, the head, the thorax, and the abdomen.

Development:  Teacher will then put an insect web on the chalkboard.
-Teacher will ask the students to name features of an insect from what was just read.
-Teacher will then add the information given from the students to the insect web.
-Teacher will accept all possible answers, but if the answer a student gives does not              correctly describe an insect, the teacher will correct the students by saying the correct answer and thank the student for their answer.
-The students will copy the insect web into their science journals.
-The teacher will then ask the students to find a partner and an insect book from the             library (books already in the classroom).
-The teacher will explain to the students that they can look through the books and choose     any insect they want to complete the “Observe an Insect” worksheet.

Closure: The teacher will ask each student share what insect they chose and tell the class one interesting fact about their insect.  Students will complete their worksheet for homework if it is not completed in class.

Assessment: I will informally assess the students by checking their journals to see that they have copied down the insect web correctly.  The students worksheets will also be graded on whether or not they completed them.
