Chapter 3 Science Review Sheet

Adaptation-- A change that a plant or animal has made so that it can    survive.
 Examples of Adaptations:
--Camouflage-- The way an animals skin or fur looks     that allows it to blend in with it’s surroundings.
   --Big ears--to hear better.
   --Stinky smell--to keep enemies away.

Organism-- A living thing...Usually a plant or animal.

Producer-- An organism that makes it’s own food....PLANTS ARE     PRODUCERS.

Consumers-- An organism that can not make it’s own food... ANIMALS    ARE CONSUMERS, it eats either plants or other animals.

Population-- A group of the SAME KIND of plants or animals living    together.
  A population of Deer.
  A population of Maple Trees.

Community-- A group of DIFFERENT KINDS of plants and animals    living together. A Desert or a Forest or a Pond community.
Habitat-- Where a plant or animal finds food, water, shelter, and space    to live. A plant or animal’s home.

Prey-- Animals that are caught and eaten by other animals.
  Example: Mice, Rabbits, Deer

Predators-- Animals that catch and eat other animals.
  Examples: Snakes, Wolves, Lions.

Pollution-- A way in which people can harm a plant or animal’s habitat.
  Example: Oil spill

Food Chains-- How energy passes from one living thing to the next.
Start with the sun, which gives energy to plants to grow.
Animals than eat the plants. (PREY)
Other animals eat the plant eaters. (PREDATORS)
Other animals may eat even eat these meat eaters.
When the last animal in the food chain dies, bacteria eat    the dead animals--which then provide energy for plants to    grow.
Food Chains are like a circle:
