Materials: Fish poster and pictures of different kinds of fish. Fish work sheets.
Advanced Organizer: The book, Big Al, by Bob Stibbens.
Prompt: Question: How does a Fish Breathe Under Water?
Procedure: Read book. Discuss with students how fish breathe. Point out where a fish’s gills are located. Have students come up and point out different characteristics that group fish into one group. Have students help develop two lists, one for fish and one for swimming mammals. Have them brain storm some ideas about how these two groups are different.
Closure: As a group, the class will come up with an example of a fish and a swimming mammal.
