Insect vs. Spiders
Objectives: SWBAT -Distinguish between an Insect and a Spider.
-Accurately label the body parts of both organisms.
- Compare and contrast the three basic growth patterns
of
Insects (Simple Growth, Incomplete
Change & Complete).
- Construct an anatomically correct Spider or Insect.
Materials: Spider and Insect handouts, and posters, 50 sticks
of clay, 100 pipe
pipe cleaners, one bag tiny eyes, one bag of small eyes, card
board,
toothpicks, tape, paper wings, stapler, and Insect model.
Prompt: Put posters on the board that show many different spiders and
insects.
Procedure: Teacher will start class by having students brainstorm as
many ways
that spiders and insects differ as possible. Then brainstorm
how they are
alike. Put both lists on the overhead.
? Do An Insect or Not and Insect Development hand outs
as a group, selecting
student to read out loud.
? Show students clay model of an Insect. Explain that they can make
any bug they want but it must be anatomically correct.
? Hand out supplies needed; 2 sticks of clay, 5 pipe cleaners, card
board base to each student.
? Have wings and eyes available at back table for those who want them.
? Remind them to put their names on their cardboard.
?
Closure: Bring class back together as a whole and have each student
explain to the class what they created
and how we can tell that it is an Insect or a Spider.
Assessment: Clay models: anatomically correct.
