Lesson Plan # 5
What makes a Mammal a Mammal?
Objectives: SWBAT: - List the characteristics of a Mammal
            - Visually distinguish a mammal form other animals
            - Draw an  example of a mammal
            - Organize pictures of animals into groups of mammals and
   non-mammals.
Materials: Mammal handout, 25 magnetic animal cards, blue science folder, and
     drawing material.
Prompt: Write the question--What makes a Mammal a Mammal??-- on the board.
Procedure: -Start class with the discussion about Mammal characteristics.
        - Students will read Mammal handout.
        - Return to characteristics list and add new info.
  - Ask questions, such as:
   Do all Mammals have fur?
   Do all Mammals have live births?
        - Hand out magnetic animals and make chart on chalk board. Have  students state out loud if their animal is a Mammal or not and how they can  tell if their answer is correct, by listing missing or available characteristics.
Closure: Check chart with class to make sure both groups are correct. Restate
     characteristics with students one last time. Have students draw a picture  of a Mammal in their Science folders and list their characteristics on the  opposite  page.
Assessment: Science folder drawing and list Mammal characteristics.
