Geese Migration: How and Why Do They Do It
Objectives: SWBAT- Describe how a goose is able to cover such long distances
when migrating.
- Demonstrate
the movements of a goose’s wing that enables it to fly.
- Point
out the most popular fly ways.
- Construct
a paper model of a goose.
Materials: Goose fact sheets and posters. Brown and tan construction paper, goose tracers, stapler, and a straw.
Prompt: Paper model of a goose, and Question: do birds fly by just flapping their wings up and down or is there more involved?
Procedure: Teacher will start discussion on exactly how a goose moves it’s wings that enables it to fly. Students will demonstrate the proper way to move their arms in order to get enough lift for flying (refer to fact poster). Half of the students will work on building their model of a Canada Goose. The other half will work on their goose facts sheets. When both groups are finished they will switch places.
Closure: Teacher will mount geese in “V” formation, preferably heading
south. As a group, the class will go over the student’s findings
on their fact sheets.
Assessment: Goose fact sheets and how anatomically correct their goose
model is.
