Bird Bones vs. Cow Bones
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to help children discover what
adaptations birds have that allow them to fly.
Objectives: After this lesson the student will be able to:
? Distinguish between a mammal bone and a bird bone.
? Describe the characteristics of a bird bone that allow it to fly.
? Draw a cross section of a bird and mammal bone.
? Apply information to new situations.
Materials: Seven chicken leg bones, seven cow leg bones (all
baked and cleaned), a variety of feathers, scissors, and the Bones
and Feathers Observation Sheet.
Prompt: Question on board: How come cows can’t fly??
Procedure: Teacher will start by asking the question, “ How come cows
can’t fly?” The students will then by placed in prearranged learning
groups and the materials for the lesson will be handed out at this
time. The students will be given 15 minutes to observe the bones
and feathers , and to complete their observation sheets.
Closure: The group will then come back together to discuss their observations,
and to answer the question as to why cows can not fly. Students will
also update their classification charts.
Assessment: The conclusion section of their observation sheets.
