Subject: Science                                                                                      Grade: Third
Unit: Animals         Time: 30 min.
Lesson: #2

Cold-blooded vs. Warm-blooded
Characteristics and Habits
Objectives: SWBAT - Distinguish between Cold and Warm-blooded animals.
             - List characteristics of both groups.
             - List examples from each group.
             - Draw a picture of an animal from each group.
             - Demonstrate the ability to formulate a hypothesis.

Materials: Picture of a thermometer with hat and coat, pictures of warm and cold- blooded animals, cold water, and a fish in clear container.
Prompt: Thermometer on board.
Procedure: Teacher will lead discussion on warm and cold-blooded animals.
? What is our body temperature?
? Does our body temperature change if it is cold outside?
? How do we keep our ourselves warm in the cold?
? What does an animal have to keep it’s body heat in?
? What about their babies, how do they stay warm?
? Can you list a few animals that have these characteristics?
? What about animals that do not have fur or feathers...list a few?
? Why don’t they have fur or feathers?
? If their bodies don’t generate their own heat, where do they get it from?
? How about their babies... do they have to keep them warm?
? What happens to them in the winter?
? Why is it so important to stay warm?
? What do you think would happen to a cold blooded animal if it got too cold?
LETS FIND OUT! FIRST WE HAVE TO FORM A HYPOTHESIS.
A Hypothesis is an scientific guess based on what you know to be true.
WE KNOW>>> Cold-blooded animal gets heat from it’s surroundings.
         >>> Cold-blooded animal can not function when cold.
So... for our hypothesis: When cold water is added to Fred the fish’s bowl:              Will Fred: 1. Swim around faster to keep warm.
or  2. Sink to the bottom of the bowl?
Have children vote, and then do experiment.

Closure: Recap list on board. Fill in classification chart.
Assessment: Draw a picture of a warm and cold-blooded animal and list their characteristics.
