How People Affect Their World
PAGE 1:
The world and its wild places are under a lot of pressure. Too
many people drive too many cars, use too many pesticides, pollute the air
and water, and strip the soil of its nutrients. All of these things make
the world unhealthy for all life.
Poison in the Food Chain.

You can clean up the environment for your self and your animals friends,
and create new habitats for them. It does not matter where you live, you
can still give an animal a home, even if it is a small one. Read the paragraphs
on Page 4 and write down 5 ways you can help nature right in your own yard.

1. SO THERE WILL BE MORE
UNBLEMISHED, PEST FREE
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES,
FARMERS USE PLANES TO
DUST CROPS WITH POISONS
THAT KILL PESTS AND WEEDS.
2. WHEN THE CROPS ARE WATERED,
THE POISONS SEEP INTO THE RIVERS
AND STREAMS, MAKING THE WATER
DANGEROUS FOR WILDLIFE AND,
ULTIMATELY, FOR HUMANS. MANY
OTHER ANIMALS DIE FROM THE
POISONS MEANT FOR “PESTS”.
3. THE FISH THAT LIVE IN THE
STREAMS EAT TINY POISONED
PLANTS AND ANIMALS. POISONS
FROM THE WATER ARE STORED
IN THEIR BODIES AND WILL
EVENTUALLY KILL THEM.
4. RACCOONS, HERONS, AND OTHER
ANIMALS EAT FISH AND FROGS WITH
POISON IN THEIR BODIES. EACH ANIMAL
THAT IS HIGHER UP ON THE FOOD
CHAIN GATHERS MORE POISON IN ITS
BODY. THOSE AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD
CHAIN GET THE MOST POISON.

Lesson # 15
How People Affect Their World
Objective: SWBAT- List several ways in which humans harm plants and
animals
through loss of habitat or pollution.
- List several ways
in which humans are trying to help plants
and animals.
- Construct a feeder
to help the birds during winter time.
- Infer that what
we do as humans affects everything in our
surroundings.
Materials: 4 pages of fact sheets from Zoobooks, Sharing the World With
Animals,
observation sheets, 15 slices
stale bread with string hangers, 45 slices of
oranges, needle and heavy string, cheerios, cracked nuts, and bird seed.
Procedure: Have students in 5 coop groups. Start lesson by asking what
was the last thing we did in Science and then talk about how oil spills
harm the environment. Go on to discuss how we as humans can harm or help
our world. Explain that we are going to do some research and then follow
up with a project that will help our animal friends. Randomly select the
first group to make the bird feeders and explain that everyone will get
a chance to make one. Hand out the four sheets and rotate groups as they
finish each page. Put bird feeders on trees outside classroom windows during
recess.
Closure: Go over sheets as a group.
Assessment: Collect sheets and check for accuracy.
