Community/ Population/Habitat
Objectives: SWBAT- Distinguish between comm/pop/habitat.
- Define
the term and give examples of each.
Materials: Science text, phone book.
Prompt: Phone book
Procedure: Start by flipping through the phone book and non-chalantly
ask who could you call using the phone book that
is not a friend or relative.
List answers on the board. Circle all the
answers and try to get the students to brain
storm and think of a term that would cover all these
people. You want to direct them towards the term Community. Discuss
how a community has all different types of people and shops, schools,
banks, etc. to meet all your needs. Discuss that a population is just one
type of “thing” that is with in their community, it could be people or
a type of store. Ask the kids how they would
describe a home, then
discuss how a home is a lot like a habitat because it is where all your
needs are met.
Have the students read pages 54-56 in Science text.
Closure: Transfer all of this knowledge over to the natural world and discuss
how these terms are very similar to our own.
Assessment: In science journal draw a picture of a type of community,
label populations and habitat.
Make sure to include plants and animals.
